US CFTC Warns Prediction Markets Against Displaying Prices in Gambling Style Odds

8 August 2026 | 2 months ago

The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), in an official release numbered 9278-26 on Friday, 16 Mordad 1405 (7 August 2026), reminded entities it regulates in the event contract market of their obligation to display clear and accurate pricing information and avoid misleading consumers. The Commission's Division of Market Oversight and Market Participants Division warned that displaying prices in the American odds format used by casino style bookmakers risks misleading users about the true nature of the transaction.

Arzdigital, citing Bloomberg, reported that the warning comes amid a legal dispute between the CFTC and US state regulators; New York has separately sued the prediction market platform Kalshi seeking a 36 billion dollar penalty, alleging it operates as an unlicensed gambling business, a claim Kalshi rejects, saying it operates under direct CFTC oversight.
