Vance: United States Nearing a Deal on the Strait of Hormuz
9 August 2026 | 2 months ago
US Vice President JD Vance said, according to Al Jazeera's Washington correspondent, that the United States is nearing a deal on the Strait of Hormuz that could be finalized in the coming days. Donya-e-Eqtesad reported the remarks on Sunday, 18 Mordad 1405 (August 9, 2026). On the prospects for resolving the standoff between Washington and Tehran, Vance said Iranians have faced major pressure and that the US administration is waiting to see what Iran offers in the period ahead.
The remarks come after weeks of talks among Iran, Oman and the United States over shipping arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz. The same day, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said talks with Oman are in their final stage but that no direct negotiations with the United States are under way. The strait carries a large share of Persian Gulf oil exports, and any progress in the talks affects global oil prices and Iran's markets.
