Wall Street closes split on Tuesday: the Dow gains 537 points while the Nasdaq falls as the chip selloff continues

US equities ended Tuesday, 28 July 2026 (6 Mordad 1405), with mixed results. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 537.24 points, or 1.03 percent, at 52,747.32; the S&P 500 rose 0.21 percent to 7,428.78; and the Nasdaq Composite finished 0.22 percent lower at 24,876.91. The Nasdaq 100 fell 0.98 percent on the same day.
The divergence was driven by a continuing selloff in chipmakers' shares set against better than expected quarterly results and a fall in oil prices. Among the heaviest decliners, SanDisk lost 14.2 percent, Micron 8.8 percent, AMD 8.1 percent and Intel 5.9 percent. Concern that artificial intelligence infrastructure spending may slow, together with the Shanghai listing of Chinese memory maker CXMT, has weighed on price expectations for the sector. On the other side, Coca-Cola rose 5 percent after quarterly results beat expectations and the company raised its full year guidance, while Berkshire Hathaway gained 3.1 percent and Eli Lilly 1.9 percent.
These are the closing figures for the same session whose intraday picture Sahmino published earlier. Traders are now waiting for the Federal Reserve's interest rate decision on Wednesday, 7 Mordad, and for quarterly results from the megacap technology companies later this week.
