Sony and TSMC assess their Kumamoto plants after the earthquake
Jul 28, 2026
After a preliminary magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto prefecture in southern Japan on Tuesday, 6 Mordad 1405 (28 July 2026), companies in the semiconductor supply chain are assessing the condition of their facilities. Sony and TSMC, the world's largest contract chipmaker, both have plants in the affected area. A Sony spokesperson said the company was checking the situation, while TSMC told Kyodo News it was assessing conditions.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the quake registered the maximum 7 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale, the highest level on that scale. It knocked out power to thousands of homes, halted rail services and prompted tsunami and aftershock warnings.
Kyushu has become one of the main hubs of Japan's chip investment in recent years. Any disruption to production there carries added weight because Asian chip stocks faced a heavy selloff on Tuesday. As of publication, the companies had not completed their assessment of any damage to production lines.

Persian Gulf Petrochemical ordinary assembly fails to reach quorum, board election postponed
Mehr News Agency reported on Tuesday, 6 Mordad 1405 (28 July 2026), that the extraordinary ordinary general assembly of Persian Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company, traded under the symbol Fars, failed to convene because it did not reach the legal quorum, and the election of new board members was postponed. According to the official announcement, only 43.9 percent of voting shareholders attended, whereas holding the assembly requires the presence of more than 50 percent of voting shareholders. Hours earlier the same company's extraordinary general assembly had convened with 78.8 percent shareholder attendance and approved a capital increase. Ahead of the assemblies, the Securities and Exchange Organisation had written formally to the holding's chief executive, noting the expiry of the board members' terms, the failure to elect new members, and the need to align the company's articles of association with the approved model articles, stating that until these matters were resolved the capital increase could not be approved. The postponement comes at a time when the previous board members' terms have already ended.

South Korea's KOSPI halted after a plunge of more than 8 percent, the seventh circuit breaker this year
South Korea's stock market faced heavy selling in semiconductor shares on Tuesday 28 July 2026. The Korea Exchange (KRX) said it activated its marketwide circuit breaker at around 10:14 a.m. Seoul time after the KOSPI plunged more than 8 percent from the previous session's close. Trading in KOSPI-listed shares was halted for 20 minutes. The exchange said it was the seventh time this year that it has activated a circuit breaker. The selling was attributed to investor skepticism about heavy artificial intelligence spending by large technology companies. The same semiconductor selloff weighed on US index futures and made global risk sentiment more cautious, a backdrop that feeds into world gold and oil prices and from there into Iran's markets.
