Bitcoin Reached About $79,650 Today, Its Strongest Month in Over a Year, But It's Still Well Below Its All-Time Record (Thursday, August 27, 2026)

Bitcoin traded around $79,650 today, Thursday, August 27, 2026, per CoinGecko, ArzDigital and TradingEconomics. The world's largest cryptocurrency is having its best monthly performance in over a year, but it remains clearly below its October 2025 all-time record. The main driver has been the US Treasury's August 19 decision to roughly double its l...

Bitcoin traded around $79,650 to $79,662 at about 5:40 p.m. Tehran time today, Thursday, August 27, 2026 (5 Shahrivar 1405), up roughly 1.4 percent over the past 24 hours. During that same 24-hour window the price ranged as high as $80,475 and as low as $77,648, according to CoinGecko. The world's largest cryptocurrency by market value, now worth an estimated $1.6 trillion, is up nearly 26 percent over the past month, but it remains about 37 percent below its all-time record. In short: this week's move is a strong rebound, not a new record.

Background

Bitcoin hit its all-time record of $126,080 on October 6, 2025 (14 Mehr 1404); ArzDigital, a Persian crypto price tracker, logged a close figure, $124,725, for the same peak one day later, October 7. From then until mid-August 2026, Bitcoin was in a long correction; Sahmino reported it trading in the $62,000 to $65,000 range through much of June and July. The trend turned on August 19 (28 Mordad), when Bitcoin jumped from around $64,000 to above $72,000 within days; Sahmino reported that move on August 20 (29 Mordad) as Bitcoin's highest level since early June. The rally continued: per interactivecrypto.com, Bitcoin traded above $79,000 for the first time since May 2026 on August 21 and 22 (30 and 31 Mordad), before crossing $80,000, per tradingpedia.com, on August 25 (3 Shahrivar). Ether, the second-largest cryptocurrency, has moved with far less momentum over the same period; per CoinGecko its 30-day change is roughly negative 5 percent, a sign that much of this move has been specific to Bitcoin rather than the broader crypto market.

Bitcoin in Numbers

Per CoinGecko at about 5:40 p.m. Tehran time today: price $79,662, 24-hour change +1.4 percent, 7-day change +11.2 percent, 30-day change +26.3 percent, and distance from the all-time high 36.8 percent. ArzDigital logged close figures at the same hour: a 30-day change of about 26.0 percent, a 7-day high of $80,849, and Bitcoin's dominance of the total crypto market at 59.7 percent. TradingEconomics quoted the price at $79,557 with a 0.7 percent daily change; the small differences across these three sources are normal, since each averages a different set of exchanges. Bitcoin's market capitalization is now about $1.6 trillion.

Drivers

The main driver behind this rally was a financial policy decision in Washington, not crypto-specific news. The US Treasury announced on August 19 (28 Mordad) that it would roughly double its long-dated bond buybacks, covering the 10-to-20-year and 20-to-30-year maturity sectors, in a program set to run from September 9 through November 4, 2026, according to mcmarkets.com and CoinDesk. The move coincided with falling long-term Treasury yields and a weaker dollar, a combination that has historically supported risk assets, including Bitcoin. CoinDesk reported that same day that roughly $1.4 billion in short positions were liquidated; per interactivecrypto.com, that figure grew to more than $4 billion by August 22 (31 Mordad), meaning a significant share of the rally reflects forced short covering rather than fresh buying alone. At the same time, US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded net inflows of $517.2 million on August 19 and $307.45 million on August 21. Regulatory sentiment also improved: the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) proposed a "Regulation Crypto Assets" framework on August 18 (27 Mordad) to clarify token-offering rules, and President Trump hosted the CEOs of Coinbase, Ripple and Kraken at the White House on August 19 (28 Mordad), a meeting Sahmino covered at the time.

Outlook

This section reflects analysts' views, not a forecast. Per tradingpedia.com, Bitcoin is trading above both its 50-day moving average ($67,394) and its 200-day moving average ($72,431), keeping the broader structure bullish, but its Relative Strength Index (RSI) sits around 83, a level that signals overbought conditions and a higher risk of a short-term pullback. The first major resistance ahead is the May 6, 2026 (16 Ordibehesht 1405) peak of $82,850; a decisive break above it, on this technical reading, could open the way toward a Fibonacci extension target of $91,374. On the other side, per interactivecrypto.com, some analysts caution that the rally has been driven mainly by short covering rather than durable demand, and that a pullback toward the $76,706 to $72,431 support zone remains a real possibility.

Bottom Line

Bitcoin is having its strongest month in more than a year and touched $80,475 today, but this is not a new record; the market remains about 37 percent below its October 2025 peak. The main driver has been the US Treasury's decision to double its long-dated bond buybacks and the resulting short squeeze, both tied to policy in Washington rather than a crypto-market event. The key point for an Iranian reader who holds part of their savings in Tether or on crypto exchanges: Bitcoin's dollar-price jump does not mean a new record, and the risk of a short-term pullback, according to analysts, remains real.

What to Watch

The $82,850 level (the May 6, 2026 peak) as the first serious resistance; whether inflows into US Bitcoin ETFs continue or stall; and whether the Treasury's buyback program is actually carried out starting September 9, which will help determine whether this rally is durable or temporary.
