Oil Benchmarks: Brent, WTI & the OPEC Basket

Brent and West Texas Intermediate are oil benchmark families with specified grades, locations and delivery or contract arrangements. The OPEC Reference Basket represents a separate set of crude grades.

Brent and West Texas Intermediate are oil benchmark families with specified grades, locations and delivery or contract arrangements. The OPEC Reference Basket represents a separate set of crude grades. A benchmark helps price a sale; it is not necessarily the realised price of an Iranian cargo. Quality adjustments, freight, discounts, payment timing and volumes affect revenue. The historical EIA sources explain benchmark mechanics and changing spreads, not today’s exact basket composition or price. Inspect the current contract and observation date in any comparison.

Worked example (hypothetical)

One million barrels at a benchmark of $80 imply $80 million only before adjustments. A hypothetical $5 discount and $3 freight per barrel reduce receipts before other costs to $72 million.

Check your understanding

Does higher Brent always mean proportionally higher government revenue? No. Realised volume, net price, collection and conversion also matter.
