Ethereum Unveils Four-Year Roadmap: Biggest Protocol Rebuild Since The Merge (Monday, July 6, 2026)

Vitalik Buterin unveiled the "Lean Ethereum" roadmap on Saturday, July 4, 2026: a three-to-four-year plan to cut transaction finality from 16 minutes to seconds and harden the network against quantum computers by 2029. Ether traded near $1,791 on Monday, July 6, up nearly 13% for the week.

Lead

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin published full details of the "Lean Ethereum" roadmap on Saturday, July 4, 2026 (13 Tir 1405), a three-to-four-year plan he described as the network's third major overhaul, on par with "The Merge" in September 2022. Buterin said the plan will replace nearly every major piece of the protocol, with the end goal of making the network fully resistant to quantum computers by 2029.

Background

The roadmap follows a meeting of Ethereum researchers in Berlin roughly two weeks earlier to set the protocol's long-term direction. Ethereum has gone through two major structural shifts before: its 2015 launch, and The Merge in September 2022 (Shahrivar 1401), which switched the network's consensus mechanism from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake. Buterin calls Lean Ethereum the third iteration in that lineage, but unlike The Merge, this is not a single upgrade; it is a series of sequential hard forks spread over the next three to four years.

Drivers

Buterin points to two main drivers behind the redesign. First, growing competition from faster layer-1 and layer-2 networks is pushing Ethereum toward sharply lower slot times and faster finality; to that end, slot design is being decoupled from finality design so each can be optimized independently. Second, a long-term concern over quantum computing: the development team plans to replace current cryptographic signatures with hash-based signatures and recursive STARK proofs, technologies considered resistant to quantum attacks. Another strand of the plan explores alternatives to the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), such as the RISC-V architecture or a custom design called leanISA, to make smart-contract execution simpler and cheaper. Crypto trade media report roughly seven sequential hard forks are planned to carry out the roadmap, the first of which, dubbed "Hegota," is targeted for the second half of 2026.

Outlook

Some analytical outlets, including BeInCrypto, report pushback within parts of the Ethereum developer community over how realistic the three-to-four-year timeline is, given the scale of core-protocol rewrites required. Iranian crypto media have also partly credited ether's roughly 13% weekly price gain, alongside renewed inflows into US spot bitcoin ETFs, to market enthusiasm for the roadmap; as analysts note, this is a read on market sentiment, not a firm forecast for where the price goes next.

What to watch

The roadmap's first practical test will be the final schedule and technical scope of the "Hegota" hard fork in the second half of 2026. Because a significant share of Iranian crypto users and exchanges track ether and tether trading through domestic platforms such as Nobitex, any delay or change to that timeline is likely to be reflected in domestic crypto media coverage. Sahmino will continue following the roadmap's rollout and its effect on ether's price in future reports.
