Tehran's free-market dollar closed Saturday evening at 206,010 tomans, up 2.7% from Thursday's close of 200,600 tomans. The rate climbed in stages through the day, first to the 203,000-toman channel and then, after a presidential speech, to 205,000 tomans (Boursenews and Ecoiran, 29 Aug 2026). On the official side, the Central Bank's new policy of selling banknotes up to $1,000 through the national-ID card channel at a rate close to the market margin put the banking-network rate at 198,000 tomans, narrowing its gap with the free market to about 8,000 tomans; Ecoiran reports that of a $500 million package offered between 25 and 27 August, only $20 million was absorbed by the market. A third rate, the negotiated ("tavafoghi") transfer rate at Iran's Currency Exchange Center, rose 442 tomans to 158,480 tomans (sell) and 157,053 tomans (buy); it remains about 47,500 tomans below the free market. The euro traded at 238,790 tomans in the free market, while its transfer rate at the Exchange Center fell about 320 tomans to 183,809 tomans, a divergence Ecoiran attributed to "fundamentally different drivers" behind the two currencies.
