Tehran Stock Exchange Closes the Week at a Record 6,386,576 Points the Same Night Global Gold Drops 3 Percent on Fed Remarks: Market Pulse, Morning of Saturday, August 29, 2026

Tehran's benchmark TEDPIX index rose 2.6 percent on Wednesday, August 26 (4 Shahrivar) to a record 6,386,576 points, capping a roughly 5.4 percent weekly gain. But on Friday night, August 28 (6 Shahrivar), hawkish remarks from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh at Jackson Hole sent global gold down 3.08 percent to $4,458.89 and pulled bitcoin back toward $78,40...

Tehran's benchmark TEDPIX index rose 2.6 percent on Wednesday, August 26, 2026 (4 Shahrivar 1405) to a record 6,386,576 points, capping its most active and record setting week in months with a roughly 5.4 percent weekly gain. But that same night, Friday, August 28 (6 Shahrivar), hawkish remarks from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh at the annual Jackson Hole symposium flipped the script on global markets: gold, which had climbed toward a three month high just a day earlier, fell 3.08 percent to $4,458.89, and bitcoin retreated from near $80,000 toward $78,400. Now that the Tehran Stock Exchange reopens Saturday, August 29 (7 Shahrivar) not far off last week's record, the question is whether Iran's own gold and coin market gives back some of its recent gains too.

Today's Top Stories

  • Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's hawkish Jackson Hole speech (Friday, Aug 28) sent global gold down 3.08 percent and pushed the odds of a September rate hike to near 50 percent (Trading Economics, Cointelegraph).
  • TEDPIX closed the week at a record 6,386,576 points on Wednesday; dozens of large caps, including Foolad, Shepna, Fameli, Khodro, Shasta and Vabmellat, hit 52 week highs the same day (TSETMC).
  • Farabourse listed Shavan (Niriz Petrochemical) posted its 17th straight higher close on volume 2.2 times its 20 session average, reaching a 52 week high of 33,310 rials (TSETMC).
  • Qatar extended its LNG export force majeure to November, lifting Asian and European gas prices (Oilprice, Aug 29).
  • An Iraqi lawmaker said Baghdad needs 8 trillion dinars a month to cover public sector salaries (Donya-e-Eqtesad, Aug 29).

Currency

The free market dollar traded at 200,600 toman at 16:59 Tehran time on Wednesday, August 26, up just 0.05 percent on the day, after touching roughly 202,000 toman earlier in the week. The negotiated rate dollar (via Iran's Currency and Gold Exchange Center) stood at 158,039 toman to sell and 156,616 toman to buy at 10:00 the same day. On Thursday, August 27, Abdolnaser Hemmati announced a 500 million dollar injection of negotiated rate currency on the margins of the market and put its gap to the free rate at about 21 percent; Sahmino's own two rate readings from that same day imply a slightly wider gap, suggesting the free rate ticked up again later on Wednesday. The live USD rate is tracked on Sahmino.

Gold and Coin

Tehran's 18 karat gold closed Wednesday at 16:59 at 21,746,400 toman, up 0.32 percent on the day and near this week's records; the Emami coin held nearly flat at 216,010,000 toman the same hour. But Friday night, the global gold ounce, which had climbed toward $4,690 on Thursday, fell 3.08 percent to $4,458.89 after Warsh's Jackson Hole remarks, its lowest in a week; silver dropped about 4 percent alongside it. Sahmino's most recent gold reading, at 01:04 Tehran time Saturday morning, put the ounce near $4,454. Gold is still up 9.66 percent over the past month and 29.27 percent over the past year, with its all time high of $5,608.35 set in Bahman 1404 (January 2026) still well out of reach. Given the direct link between Iran's domestic gold and coin market and the global ounce, this drop could pull back some of Tehran gold and coin's recent gains once the local market updates; that is an expectation, not a price that has been recorded yet. The live 18 karat gold rate can be tracked on Sahmino.

Bourse and Farabourse

TEDPIX, the Tehran Stock Exchange's own index and a separate instrument from the Farabourse index, rose 2.6 percent on Wednesday, August 26 to a record 6,386,576 points, capping a roughly 5.4 percent weekly gain; trade value on the bourse that day reached about 32.8 trillion toman (32.8 hemat). The equal weight index also rose 2.1 percent. Dozens of large caps, including Foolad, Shepna, Fameli, Khodro, Shasta and Vabmellat, opened two to three percent higher with active buy queues and hit 52 week highs the same day; Khodro logged its ninth straight higher close and Vabmellat its sixth.

The Farabourse index rose 1.95 percent the same day to 50,680 points, a roughly 4.05 percent gain for the week from 48,708 points the previous Saturday; Farabourse trade value that day reached about 138 trillion toman (138 hemat), more than the bourse itself. The week's Farabourse standout was Shavan (Niriz Petrochemical), which posted its 17th consecutive higher close on volume 2.2 times its 20 session average to hit a 52 week high of 33,310 rials and still carried a buy queue; Aniz also hit a 52 week high on its sixth straight up session. In the Base Market, Khodkafa led turnover with a buy queue and trade value near 592 billion rials, the busiest name on that thinner, more volatile tier. Kian Financial Group Holding's assembly also approved a 180 percent capital increase funded from retained earnings (Codal, Thursday, Aug 27).

Crypto

Bitcoin traded at $77,619 at 07:58 Tehran time Saturday morning, up 0.16 percent on the day but still well off Thursday's weekly high of $81,209. Following Warsh's remarks, bitcoin retreated toward $78,400 on Friday night alongside gold's drop, a sign that both risk assets and safe havens came under pressure as markets raised the odds of a Fed rate hike. Tether traded at 202,498 toman in the domestic market Saturday morning. Elsewhere, gold funds pulled in $4.21 billion over the past week and US ether funds logged their strongest inflows in ten months (Arzdigital, Saturday, Aug 29), figures recorded before Friday evening's drop, so next week's flows bear watching.

Iron and Steel

The Iran Mercantile Exchange's settlement price for A3 rebar, sizes 14 to 20mm, was 743,837 rials per kilogram (about 74,384 toman) on Wednesday, August 26; the mill price for 10mm A3 rebar from Aryan Steel in the open market was quoted at 75,450 toman per kilogram on Friday, August 28, a relatively narrow gap between the two markets. In China, Shanghai rebar futures rose 0.84 percent to 3,130 yuan a tonne on Friday, in step with somewhat firmer global steel demand.

Vehicles

In the auto market, Saipa's Pride 151 GX was priced at 1,180,000,000 toman on Friday, August 28, little changed from recent days; the vehicle market was quiet this week with no fresh pricing news from the Competition Council or the Ministry of Industry.

Building Materials

Type 2 (42.5 grade) 50 kilogram cement bags settled at an average of 194,227 toman on the Iran Mercantile Exchange on Wednesday, August 26, while retail prices for the same bag from producers such as Abyek Cement and Tehran Cement reached 289,000 to 291,000 toman on Friday, August 28, a gap that partly reflects freight and distribution costs. Saveh Cement, at 260,000 toman, was the cheapest bag tracked in the same window.

Regional and Global Outlook

Brent crude held nearly flat at $88.29 Saturday morning, even as Oilprice reported (Friday, Aug 28) that it was on track for a weekly loss; the same report put daily charter rates for VLCC supertankers at up to $650,000 a day. On Wall Street, the S&P 500 was down 0.25 percent and the Nasdaq 0.52 percent Saturday morning, while European equities closed higher overnight, with the STOXX 600 up 0.51 percent and the Euro STOXX 50 up nearly one percent. Qatar extended its LNG export force majeure to November, lifting Asian and European gas prices, while Trump announced a major oil deal with Venezuela covering access to roughly 65 billion barrels of reserves. Regionally, the Turkish lira (48.20 to the dollar) and the Chinese yuan (6.726) were essentially unchanged, and an Iraqi lawmaker said Baghdad needs 8 trillion dinars a month for public sector salaries, a sign of persistent fiscal strain in Iran's western neighbor.

Bottom Line

Today was not global gold's day; Kevin Warsh's remarks snapped its three month rally, at least for one night. But the Tehran Stock Exchange enters the new week on the back of Wednesday's record and a 5.4 percent weekly gain. The one thing to remember: when Iran's domestic gold and coin market updates on Saturday, Friday night's global drop is the first thing to watch in the price.

What to Watch Today

The Tehran Stock Exchange reopens today, Saturday, at 9:00 local time; the first question is whether Wednesday's record and the buy queues in Foolad, Shepna, Fameli, Khodro, Shasta and Vabmellat carry over, or whether a correction is due. In gold and coin, Friday evening's global drop is the first pullback to show up in the local price after weeks of steady gains. Globally, the US August jobs report on September 4 and any further Fed remarks will shape the path into the September 15 to 16 rate meeting. Sahmino's market calendar lists the week's scheduled events at a glance.
