The Neighborhood's Markets

Neighbouring markets connect to Iran through trade, energy, freight, tourism, finance and settlement. The Persian Gulf, Iraq, the Caucasus and Central Asia have distinct currencies, institutions and product mixes; geographic proximity alone does not create one market. Compare a route’s net delivered cost, time and accessible proceeds rather than one headline FX quote. A growing trade total may reflect prices rather than physical volume. Record country, observation period, product and source before drawing a channel from a regional event to an Iranian asset.

Worked example (hypothetical)

Route A has a 100-unit goods price, 8 freight and 2 settlement cost: 110 total. Route B quotes goods at 97 but adds 12 freight and 4 settlement: 113. The lower goods quote is not the lower delivered cost.

Check your understanding

What would make a comparison unreliable? Different grades, quantities, dates, currencies or delivery terms. Match them before inferring a market opportunity.
