Trump Vows the "Most Crushing" Sanctions Yet on Iran; Iran Market Pulse, Midday Thursday, Aug 20, 2026: Global Gold Breaks Above $4,500 as Dollar, Gold and Coin Rise Together

Trump said early Thursday, August 20, 2026, that he will soon unveil the "most crushing economic action" in history against Iran, as Strait of Hormuz diplomacy stalled again and confirmed tanker transits fell 17 percent. Global gold broke above $4,500 for the first time in two months, trading near $4,485 by 11am Tehran time; Tehran's free-market do...

1. Lead

US President Donald Trump wrote on social media early Thursday, August 20, 2026 (29 Mordad 1405), that he would soon announce the "most crushing economic action in history" against Iran, warning any country that trades with Iran would face "severe economic consequences," Al Jazeera reported. The threat landed alongside a fresh stall in Strait of Hormuz diplomacy: Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi told Donya-e-Eqtesad that transit management in the strait would follow only Iran's own arrangements, while shipping-data firm Kepler recorded confirmed tanker transits through the strait on Tuesday down 17 percent from normal, at just 10 vessels. That combination of risk pushed global gold above $4,500 an ounce for the first time in two months and lifted Tehran's dollar, 18-karat gold and Emami coin together, though, bucking the trend, the coin premium fell sharply from yesterday. Tehran's stock exchange is closed today for its weekly Thursday holiday.

3. Today's Top Headlines

  • Trump: the "most crushing economic action" in history against Iran is coming (Al Jazeera, early Thursday)
  • Hormuz diplomacy stalls again; tanker transits fall 17% (Donya-e-Eqtesad citing Kepler, FT and CNN, Thursday)
  • Global gold breaks above $4,500 for the first time in two months (Arzdigital citing Trading Economics, early Thursday)
  • CBI Governor Hemmati: no blocked funds released yet, no plan to change the bank rate (Ecoiran and Donya-e-Eqtesad, early Thursday)
  • Silver fund "Yas" hits its 1-trillion-toman subscription cap in seconds, a TSE record (Bourse News, early Thursday)

4. Currency

Tehran's free-market dollar rose 1,185 tomans (0.63%) from yesterday evening to 189,785 tomans by 11:05am today; the free-market euro rose 0.71% to 221,490 tomans. At the same time, the Iran Currency and Gold Exchange Center's agreed-rate dollar transfer (sell) stood at 156,545 tomans, putting the gap between the free and official agreed rate at roughly 33,240 tomans, a touch wider than last week. Live rates are on Sahmino's currency price page.

Today's dollar move traces to the same mix of Trump's sanctions threat and the Hormuz diplomatic stall described in the lead. CBI Governor Abdolnasser Hemmati told Donya-e-Eqtesad early today that, with many banks carrying negative capital, cutting the bank rate alone cannot control inflation, so there is no plan for now to change it; he said disinflation has not stopped, though minor effects from rents could show up in the coming weeks. Hemmati separately told Ecoiran that no portion of Iran's blocked funds has been released under the relevant memorandum so far, a remark that, alongside Trump's fresh threat, helps explain today's psychological pressure on the currency market.

5. Gold and Coin

Tehran's 18-karat gold rose 209,700 tomans (1.06%) from yesterday evening to 19,969,100 tomans per gram by 11:05am, and the Emami coin rose 1,520,000 tomans (0.77%) to 199,540,000 tomans. The surprise was the coin premium: per Sahmino's own feed, it fell from about 1,432,000 tomans yesterday to 865,000 tomans today, a drop of nearly 40 percent, a sign that today's coin-price rally has outrun its premium rather than being driven by speculative demand. Live rates are on the gold price page.

Global gold, per Arzdigital citing Trading Economics, broke above $4,500 early today for the first time since early June and touched $4,511 at its peak; the trigger was a sharp drop in the odds of a Fed rate hike (from about 82% to roughly 30% on the CME FedWatch tool) after softer US inflation data. By 11:04am Tehran time, per Sahmino's own feed, spot gold had eased 0.77% off that peak to $4,485.30. That continues last night's record run. Separately, Wells Fargo yesterday cut its year-end gold forecast for the third time in 2026, to $4,900 to $5,100 an ounce from a prior $5,300 to $5,500, a sign the recent surge is not necessarily read as a durable trend by every desk. In a separate report, a deputy at Iran's Economy Ministry told Fars early today that of roughly 400 licensed online gold-sale platforms in Iran, only about 9 are genuinely active and credible, with oversight still handled manually by cyber police.

6. Bourse and Farabourse

Tehran's bourse and Farabourse are closed today, Thursday, for the weekly holiday. The last session, Wednesday, closed with TEDPIX up 4,928 points (0.08%) at 5,952,488, and the equal-weight index up 13,131 points (0.78%). On the week, TEDPIX has gained 3.76% since Sunday and the Farabourse index, a separate exchange from Tehran's bourse, which closed Wednesday at 47,854 points, has gained 3.90%; a rising week for both markets. Wednesday's trade value came to roughly 37,451 billion tomans on the bourse and about 267,972 billion tomans on Farabourse; on the bourse board, retail investors were net buyers of about 5.6 billion shares more than institutions.

Two stories led capital-market news today. The "Yas" silver fund, the eleventh from the Toranj group, hit its 1-trillion-toman subscription ceiling within seconds of opening this morning, per Bourse News, a fresh Iranian record for a silver-fund subscription, with retail investors making up 83% of demand. Separately, Ako Battery Iranian, the eleventh new listing of Iranian year 1405, offered 4% of its shares on the Tehran bourse's second market; its CEO says the company holds 50% of Iran's industrial battery market.

7. Crypto

Global crypto is rallying today: by 11:02am Tehran time Bitcoin was up 1.33% at $69,705 and Ethereum had jumped 6.49% to $2,254; domestically, Tether was up 0.81% at 189,632 tomans. Per Arzdigital, the trigger is the US Treasury doubling its long-end debt buybacks, which has boosted market liquidity; Cointelegraph had put Bitcoin at an 11-week high near $68,500.

Overnight, the US administration told a White House crypto summit with Coinbase, Ripple and Kraken executives that it is examining ways to expand the strategic Bitcoin reserve beyond seized assets; the US government currently holds about 323,693 Bitcoin (roughly $21.2 billion). Trump pressed Congress on the CLARITY Act, with a Senate vote set for September 15. The CFTC's crypto Innovation Advisory Committee holds its first session today with 35 members, including Coinbase and CME.

8. Steel

The Iran Mercantile Exchange's cleared settlement price for A3 rebar, sizes 14 to 20mm, closed yesterday at 70,048 tomans per kilogram; Aryan Steel's factory-gate price for 14mm rebar in the free market stands today at 70,450 tomans per kilogram, only about 400 tomans (under 1%) above the exchange settlement, a far tighter gap than in recent volatile weeks, suggesting the free and official rebar markets have converged this week. In Shanghai, rebar futures were nearly flat today, up just 3 yuan (0.1%) at 3,031 yuan per tonne; Iranian steel exports remain under the same Hormuz shipping constraints covered in the regional section below.

9. Cars

Iran's Administrative Court of Justice yesterday annulled Competition Council ruling No. 473 on how car pre-payments are calculated in pre-sale schemes, IRNA reported via Donya-e-Eqtesad. Previously, the amount paid at registration was treated as a fixed share of the car's price; going forward, the price at delivery time, not registration time, will set the calculation. The Competition Council's spokesperson said the body will comply with the court's final ruling despite having defended its own rule earlier, a change that could work for or against buyers on long pre-sale plans, depending on where car prices move before delivery. In the free market, the new Pride 151 GX remains unchanged today at 1.15 billion tomans.

10. Building Materials

Type 2 (42.5) bagged cement cleared on the Iran Mercantile Exchange yesterday at 194,837 tomans per 50kg bag, while the same bag sells in Tehran's free retail market (Tehran Cement) today at 291,000 tomans, a retail markup of about 96,000 tomans, nearly 49%, over the exchange wholesale rate. Abyk and Saveh cement post similar bags at 289,000 and 260,000 tomans respectively, showing the spread varies by producer. With no fresh auction or news in this market today, the gap will likely hold through the week absent new developments.

11. Regional and Global Markets

Brent crude was up 1.95% at $93.23 by 11:04am today and WTI up 1.28% at $85.47, both driven mainly by the same 17% drop in Hormuz tanker transits. US equities closed modestly higher overnight: the S&P 500 up 0.21% at 7,708, the Nasdaq up 0.16% at 26,331 and the Dow up 0.23% at 53,468; the July Fed minutes released Wednesday evening showed most members favoring a rate hike if inflation fails to cool. In China, per Trading Economics, the central bank held its one-year and five-year loan prime rates at 3.0% and 3.5% for a 14th straight month, while July crude imports jumped 22% month-on-month to 8.45 million barrels a day, per Reuters, stockpiling that is helping cap global oil prices during the West Asia crisis. The Turkish lira was little changed today at 47.95 per dollar. In Russia, per Bloomberg, a drone strike on a Rosneft-owned refinery in Bashkortostan pushed the country's gasoline and diesel exports in the first week of August down to 80,000 barrels a day, the lowest in years; in the UK, per Cornwall Insight, the household energy price cap is set to rise about 4% from October to roughly £1,729 a year, a move analysts tie directly to the Iran war's pressure on European gas supply.

12. Bottom Line

Today's verdict is clear: geopolitical risk is back, and gold is winning it, not only globally, where it broke $4,500 for the first time in two months, but in Tehran too, where the dollar, gold and coin all rose together. Worth remembering: the coin premium fell at the same time, a sign that today's rally, unlike past speculative jumps, has not yet drawn a wave of hoarding demand and is instead tracking the currency and global gold move itself.

13. What to Watch Today

  • The full market reaction once Trump's threatened measures are actually detailed
  • Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's Jackson Hole speech (Aug 28) and the US jobs report (Sept 4) as gold's next catalysts
  • The US Senate's vote on the CLARITY Act, set for September 15
