• Spot gold below $4,000: gold fell nearly 1.8% on Thursday, 16 July, to around $3,992, below the psychological $4,000 line, a marked drop from the mid-week $4,060 zone. The main driver was the jump in oil and the revival of inflation fears in the US (per CNBC and Sahmino data).

Why: the engine of this week's surge was the security uncertainty after the return of the naval blockade, which kept hedging demand for foreign currency high. Now that the external front shows signs of easing, the question is whether the domestic market reads that signal too. Gold and coin

Domestic gold and coins closed Thursday with a mild decline in step with the global ounce's retreat: a gram of 18-karat gold fell 0.63% to 18,245,100 tomans, and a mesghal of gold stood near 79 million tomans. The coin, however, behaved differently: the Emami coin held almost unchanged at 184,995,000 tomans, and the Bahar Azadi coin traded near 180 million tomans. Why this picture matters: the key point is the Emami coin premium (hobab). While the base metal (global and domestic gold) grew cheaper, the coin premium did not shrink; it widened to around 7,194,000 tomans, its widest in recent weeks. The premium is the gap between the coin's market price and the intrinsic value of its metal; when that gap widens on a day the global ounce is falling, it means the domestic buyer is willing to pay more to physically hold a safe asset. The latest picture is the Wednesday, 15 July (24 Tir) close: TEDPIX fell 0.63% to 4,893,834 points and remained below the psychological 4.92 million and 5 million lines. Last week's selling pressure was a mix of money rotating out of stocks into parallel markets and uncertainty over when war-damaged symbols will reopen.

Why: Saturday's first session (27 Tir) is special because it coincides with the Oman table. The key gauge will be which signal the stock market reads: the relative calm of global markets and the diplomatic hope, or the record of fear logged in the parallel market.

Crypto

The global crypto market was slightly lower on Friday morning. Bitcoin fell 1.23% to $63,411 (about 11.98 billion tomans) and ethereum eased 1.31% to around $1,849. The domestic Tether rate, near 189,000 tomans, is effectively a mirror of the free-market dollar. Iron, steel and commodities

In the physical steel market, the latest confirmed prices refer to the Wednesday, 15 July (24 Tir) close: factory-made ribbed rebar (an Arian Foulad sample) around 66,820 tomans per kilogram in size 10 and around 65,550 tomans in size 12. Domestic steel prices feed on three drivers: the exchange rate, which keeps production costs high; the trend of global steel and iron-ore prices; and, this time, energy cost. The car market had no fresh confirmed price event over the weekend and is mostly driven by two variables: the dollar stabilizing at a record near 188,000 tomans, which keeps a floor under free-market prices, and factory pricing decisions (the Competition Council and the Ministry of Industry) that set the gap between the factory price and the market price (the market margin). Materials

In building materials, based on the latest figures, a ton of bulk Portland type-2 cement (a Tehran Cement sample) was around 4,014,000 tomans. The main drivers of this market are seasonal construction demand and energy cost, and its trend usually lags the surge in the exchange rate. Regional and global backdrop

Today's global picture, unlike last week's high tension, had the color of de-escalation. Brent crude, after four days of gains and a rally of more than 11%, pulled back with some profit-taking to around $84 to $85, and WTI traded near $79.5; but concern over supply disruption in the Strait of Hormuz keeps a floor under the price.
