Lesson 19

Intro to Technical Analysis

Technical analysis summarises price and volume history. A moving average smooths observations; it does not discover a guaranteed future price.

Technical analysis summarises price and volume history. A moving average smooths observations; it does not discover a guaranteed future price. RSI, MACD and other indicators transform the same underlying series and are not independent pieces of evidence merely because their names differ. Choose consistent frequency, adjustment basis and observation count. An adjusted share series handles corporate actions differently from raw traded prices. Missing or stale observations can distort a signal. Sahmino labels the basis and dates; read them before interpreting a chart.

Worked example (hypothetical)

Five closes of 100, 102, 98, 104 and 106 give a five-observation simple average of 102. Replacing the oldest close with 110 raises it to 104. Neither calculation establishes what tomorrow’s close will be.

Check your understanding

Can two indicators agree because they reuse the same data? Yes. Check data quality and avoid counting correlated transformations as separate confirmations.
