Houthi Forces Seize Yemen's Mokha Port and Bab al-Mandeb Islands
17 September 2026 · All day · Political event · West Asia
Outcome
Yemen's Houthi movement seized full control of Yemen's western coast, the port of Mokha, and key Bab al-Mandeb Strait islands, including Mayyun and the Hanish islands, in a coordinated operation reported on September 18, 2026. About 12 percent of world trade passes through the strait, which had become an alternate route for Saudi oil exports after the Strait of Hormuz crisis. A Houthi spokesperson said navigation would be safe for all vessels except Saudi ones.
