55 Percent of Iran's Dam Reservoir Capacity Is Empty, and Lar Dam Is Only 4 Percent Full

16 October 2026 | 4 days ago

According to the latest dam-monitoring data reported by Jamaran and republished by Donya-e-Eqtesad on Friday, October 16, 2026 (24 Mehr 1405), water in the country's dam reservoirs had reached 23.31 billion cubic metres by 19 Mehr 1405 (October 11, 2026). That is 30 percent more than a year earlier and 4 percent above the long-term average, but 55 percent of reservoir capacity is still empty. Inflow since the start of the water year to that day was 0.82 billion cubic metres, 62 percent above the same period last year and 1 percent below the ten-year average.

In the Tehran and Alborz basin, Lar Dam, at 4 percent full, stands 42 percent below its ten-year average; Taleghan is 33 percent below, Latian 38 percent below and Mamloo 74 percent below, while Amirkabir Dam, 72 percent full, is 21 percent above its ten-year average. Six provinces, Fars, Sistan and Baluchestan, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad, Bushehr, Yazd and South Khorasan, have received no rain yet. An El Niño forecast for the west of the country gives a probability of about 70 percent of 30 to 70 millimetres more rainfall. Water behind dams bears directly on hydropower, agriculture and energy limits on industry.
