Water stored in Iran's dams is up 37 percent on last year by 4 Mordad, with reservoirs 60 percent full

2 August 2026 | 3 months ago

According to the latest figures from Iran Water Resources Management Company, published on Sunday 2 August 2026 (11 Mordad 1405), the volume of water held in the country's dam reservoirs reached 30.89 billion cubic metres as of 4 Mordad 1405 (26 July 2026), up 37 percent from 22.54 billion cubic metres in the same period last year. Reservoirs were 60 percent full at that date.

Inflows into the reservoirs from the start of the water year, which begins in Mehr, to 4 Mordad totalled 45.74 billion cubic metres, a 74 percent increase on the 26.34 billion cubic metres recorded a year earlier. Total outflows from the dams were 19 percent higher than last year. Cumulative precipitation across the country stood at 236.4 millimetres, against a long term average of 237.1 millimetres and 146.2 millimetres in the same period of the previous water year.

The distribution is uneven, however. Six dams, Lar, Doosti, Torogh, Panzdah-e Khordad, Barzoo and Saveh, remain less than 10 percent full, while three others, Nahand, Azadi and Ilam, are close to 100 percent. Water resources bear directly on hydroelectric generation, agriculture and the energy restrictions imposed on industry.
