The 60 day window under the Islamabad memorandum between Iran and the United States, signed on 27 Khordad 1405 (June 17, 2026) by Donald Trump and Masoud Pezeshkian, expired today, Monday, August 17, 2026 (26 Mordad 1405), without an extension or a final deal. According to Al Jazeera, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in a Telegram post on Saturday, August 15, that no decision had yet been made to resume negotiations with the United States. Both sides have accused each other of violating the memorandum since weeks after it was signed, and Trump declared the agreement "over" on July 7 (16 Tir 1405).
Under the memorandum, the US had committed to ending its naval blockade within 30 days, lifting sanctions, and providing a reconstruction package of at least 300 billion dollars for Iran, while Iran was to clear mines from the Strait of Hormuz and guarantee free passage for ships for 60 days. Al Jazeera reported that the Pentagon said last week it had fired on a Panama flagged cargo vessel in the Strait of Hormuz for violating the US blockade against Iran. Trump also said on Friday, August 14, that the US would soon formally declare the Strait of Hormuz its own. Araghchi separately said Iran was negotiating a parallel arrangement with Oman on new Hormuz shipping routes, but stressed this depended on reaching a political solution.
