Iran-US 60-day understanding expires today; Trump says no extension planned
17 August 2026 | 2 months ago
The 60-day window set out in the understanding between Iran and the United States for talks over Iran's nuclear program expires today, Monday, August 17, 2026. Speaking to reporters at the White House the same afternoon, US President Donald Trump was asked whether Washington would extend the understanding and replied "no," saying the US is not seeking an extension.
Trump also repeated claims about the Strait of Hormuz, saying the US has "full control" of it and that "millions of barrels" of oil are moving out of the region, with prices set to keep falling unless Washington decides on action "far more severe" than current measures. He described Iran's economic situation as "very difficult." The remarks were reported by Donya-e-Eqtesad and EcoIran on Monday, August 17, 2026.
