A Cargo Ship Was Struck by an Unidentified Projectile While Transiting the Strait of Hormuz
18 August 2026 · 2 months ago
The UK Maritime Trade Operations body (UKMTO) said on the evening of Tuesday, 18 August 2026 (27 Mordad 1405, 18:51 Tehran time), per Tasnim News Agency and carried by Donya-e-Eqtesad, that a cargo ship was struck by an unidentified projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The statement adds new detail to the same body's earlier report that morning, which had only said a "maritime incident" had occurred in the strait, without disclosing the vessel's identity or the nature of the incident.
The vessel's exact identity, the scale of any damage, or the projectile's origin had not been disclosed as of this report. The incident came on a day when global Brent crude traded above 91 dollars a barrel, and only hours after the UAE's Defense Ministry said it had intercepted a missile threat over Dubai, developments analysts say reflect escalating geopolitical risk in the Strait of Hormuz in recent days.
