A tanker off Oman was hit by an unknown projectile, damaging its engine room and leaving it out of control
1 August 2026 | 3 months ago
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported a new maritime incident off the coast of Oman early on Saturday, 1 August 2026. According to a Reuters report citing the agency, a tanker northeast of Lima in Oman was struck by an unknown projectile. The strike damaged the vessel's engine section and left the ship out of control. Anadolu Agency and Arab News carried the same report, citing the same agency.
The agency's initial report did not give the vessel's name, flag or the condition of its crew, and no party has claimed responsibility for the attack. Lima lies on Oman's Musandam peninsula alongside the Strait of Hormuz, which is why some outlets reported the incident as occurring within the Strait.
The incident comes with traffic through the Strait of Hormuz sharply reduced since military tensions in the region resumed, and with world oil prices elevated. West Texas Intermediate crude passed $86 a barrel on Friday, 31 July, and both Brent and WTI closed the month of July with gains of close to 20 percent. Any fresh event in this waterway feeds into the risk premium in world oil prices and through that into Iran's domestic markets. Initial reports of maritime incidents are typically completed or revised in the hours that follow.
