Iraq's Foreign Ministry said, according to Khabaronline citing Mehr News Agency and Al Jazeera, that Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, in a phone call on Monday, 26 Mordad 1405 (August 17, 2026), with his Iranian counterpart Seyed Abbas Araghchi, discussed that day's drone attack on the residence of the head of the Kurdistan Regional Government in Erbil. Per the report, Araghchi told Hussein he has no information indicating the attack originated from Iranian territory.
Iraq's Foreign Ministry added that previous such attacks had been justified by claims that Iranian opposition parties or groups were present in the Kurdistan region. Hussein stressed in the call that the attack represents a dangerous escalation with negative consequences for Iraqi and regional security. The Kurdistan region's counterterrorism agency had earlier blamed the attack on two Hadid-110 drones it said were launched from Iranian territory, and Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani called it illegitimate and unacceptable.
