Chinese Carmakers Lift Their Share of the European Market to 11.3 Percent in August

According to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), published by Reuters and reported by Mehr News Agency on Friday, September 25, 2026 (3 Mehr 1405), Chinese brands' share of the car market in the European Union, the United Kingdom and the European Free Trade Association countries reached 11.3% in August 2026, up from 7.1% a year earlier. According to ACEA, BYD, Chery and Leapmotor roughly doubled or tripled their sales, while Geely's sales rose more than 25% and SAIC's more than 32%.

New car registrations in the EU rose 5.3% in August to 832,637 vehicles. Battery-electric registrations grew 52.2%, plug-in hybrids 13.5% and hybrids 3.4%, and these three groups now make up more than 73% of registrations, while petrol registrations fell 23.5% and diesel 23.1%. The combined share of Stellantis, Volkswagen and Renault fell from 52% to 49.8%. Chinese brands also hold a large presence in Iran's car market.
