Countries on Monday 20 Mehr 1405 (12 October 2026) backed a joint statement stressing freedom of navigation in straits used for international shipping. EcoIran reported it, citing Tabnak and Reuters. The statement says: "We support current multilateral initiatives that are defensive and non-escalatory in nature and aimed at preserving freedom of navigation."
The signatories oppose any action that obstructs or undermines lawful shipping, including illegal tolls, transit fees, discriminatory restrictions and prior-permission requirements. The statement has the backing of countries including EU members, Australia, Japan and the United Kingdom.
The published report does not name a specific strait or country. The statement comes as shipping security in the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf's oil routes is at the centre of current tensions, affecting freight and insurance costs for oil.
