The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday, 29 July 2026, down 1,153.18 points, or 2.19%, at 51,594.14, which CNBC described as the index's worst day since April 2025. The S&P 500 fell 1.52% the same day to end at 7,316.15, and the Nasdaq Composite closed 1.74% lower at 24,442.94.
The selling followed the Federal Reserve's decision at its Wednesday meeting to leave interest rates unchanged, which the bond market read as a sign that the US central bank is falling behind on inflation. The 10-year Treasury yield rose 7 basis points the same day to above 4.67%. At the same time, rising oil prices driven by fresh tensions in West Asia added to investor concerns, and chipmaker shares came under pressure.
For Iran's markets, the direction of US indices matters through global gold and oil prices and the path of the dollar.
