European Oil and Gas Shares Rise on the Oil Spike While Main Indices Waver
16 July 2026 | 3 months ago
European equity markets were choppy and subdued on Thursday, July 16, as the US-Iran conflict and a jump in oil prices weighed on sentiment. Oil and gas shares and basic-resource stocks, by contrast, rose on the back of higher crude and outperformed the broader market.
Brent crude has traded near a one-month high, around $85 a barrel, this week. Investors also weighed softer US inflation data, which has dampened expectations of a Federal Reserve rate hike, against the risk of a further spike in energy prices. The dollar hovered near a one-month low.
