Foreign ministry source denies report of Iran Oman rift over Hormuz transit fee, describes shift from north south corridors to a jointly managed middle route
6 August 2026 · 2 months ago
An informed source at Iran's foreign ministry told Fars News Agency, carried by Ecoiran on Thursday, August 6, 2026 (15 Mordad 1405), that an earlier Reuters report describing a rift between Iran and Oman over the transit fee for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, with Iran seeking 5 to 7 percent of cargo value against Oman's proposed 3 percent, was inaccurate. The source said that under the general framework being discussed, ships would for a defined period enter the strait via a northern corridor close to Iran's coast and exit via a southern corridor close to Oman's coast; after that period, both the northern and southern corridors would be eliminated and all transit would shift to a single middle corridor, with inbound traffic managed by Iran and outbound traffic jointly managed by Iran and Oman. The source added that payments from vessels would not be based on a percentage of cargo value but would instead be structured as a services fee covering items such as insurance, refuelling and environmental costs.
