Global markets trade mixed on 4 August as Brent reaches $85 and gold hits $4,062 an ounce

4 August 2026 | 3 months ago

Global markets traded on a mixed trend on Tuesday, 4 August 2026. According to Anadolu Agency, the absence of concrete results from the ongoing talks in West Asia, along with limited tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, pushed oil prices higher and capped investors' risk appetite. Gold opened Tuesday up 0.2 percent at $4,062 per ounce, while October delivery Brent crude climbed 1.5 percent to $85 a barrel.

In debt and currency markets, the US 10 year Treasury yield traded at 4.7 percent on Tuesday and the US Dollar Index held around the 100 mark. At Monday's close, the S&P 500 had gained 1.48 percent, the Nasdaq 2.13 percent and the Dow Jones Industrial Average 1.32 percent. The Federal Reserve held rates last week while three members voted for a hike; markets expect at least one increase by year end, and Friday's nonfarm payrolls data will shape those expectations.

On the data side, the US Institute for Supply Management manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index defied expectations and reached 55.6 in July, pointing to strong economic activity. The eurozone manufacturing PMI rose to 51.9 in July, its fastest increase in the past four and a half years. The UK manufacturing PMI fell to 51.9 from 52.5 in June, its lowest level in four months.
