European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a 200 million euro investment package, about 232 million dollars, for Greenland during a two day visit to Nuuk, the territory's capital, Donya-e-Eqtesad reported, citing Bloomberg. According to the report, published Tuesday, 17 Shahrivar 1405 (September 8, 2026), the funds will be spent on critical mineral extraction, clean energy development and satellite communications infrastructure. Von der Leyen announced the package at a press conference alongside Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland's head of government, Jens Frederik Nielsen. The move comes amid heightened geopolitical sensitivity over Greenland, including earlier remarks by US President Donald Trump about annexing the island. Donya-e-Eqtesad reported that the package is estimated at 7 to 8 percent of Greenland's gross domestic product, and that the European Union is set to publish a new Arctic strategy in Mehr, October.
