Hemmati: We Have Enough Foreign Currency; Central Bank Has Supplied 18 Billion Dollars for the Country's Needs Since the Start of the Year
1 September 2026 · last month
Abdolnaser Hemmati, governor of Iran's Central Bank, speaking at the 36th Islamic Banking Conference on Tuesday, 10 Shahrivar 1405 (September 1, 2026), as reported by Khabaronline, responded to earlier comments from US President Donald Trump claiming Iran lacks sufficient foreign currency, saying the Central Bank has supplied about 18 billion dollars for the country's needs since the start of the current Iranian year, with 500 million dollars planned for market supply in the past week alone, a figure he said could rise to as much as 2 billion dollars if needed. He attributed periodic spikes in the exchange rate partly to market psychology and political pressure, saying the situation would not persist.
Hemmati also said that despite earlier concerns about Iran's economy sliding into hyperinflation, the Central Bank's monetary and precautionary measures have curbed the pace of inflation, and he assessed the probability of hyperinflation as very weak. He said banking sector facilities disbursed from the start of the year through 6 Shahrivar (August 28) reached about 4,050 trillion tomans, up 69 percent from the same period a year earlier, of which nearly 2,600 trillion tomans went to working capital for businesses, an 80 percent increase.
