Iran Conditions Hormuz Reopening on Six US Demands

Iran said in a statement issued over the weekend of 17 to 18 Mordad 1405 (August 8 to 9, 2026) that it will only reopen the Strait of Hormuz if the United States meets six conditions: a full withdrawal of US forces from the region, a permanent peace agreement, compensation for war damage, and sanctions relief including the release of Iran's frozen assets. Oilprice.com reported on Monday, 19 Mordad 1405 (August 10, 2026), that accepting these terms would be politically costly for the Trump administration, making near term acceptance unlikely. The same day, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said separately that reopening Hormuz depends on removing conditions he described as stemming from US and Israeli military aggression against Iran and the wider region. His remarks are distinct from Iran's separate, ongoing talks with Oman over technical shipping arrangements for the strait.
