According to EcoIran, citing ISNA, Japan's Kyodo News reported on Tuesday, September 22, 2026 (31 Shahrivar 1405), citing a senior Iranian official, that Tehran has sent a proposal to Washington through intermediaries under which the Strait of Hormuz would reopen within seven days and negotiations would resume if the US takes initial steps to reduce military pressure and end the blockade of Iranian ports. According to Khabar Online, citing Reuters, published the same day, another senior Iranian official said Tehran's formal proposal was delivered to the US side through intermediaries on September 16 (25 Shahrivar), and that Iran's delegation in New York has full authority to discuss reviving diplomacy. Both reports said a bilateral meeting between President Masoud Pezeshkian and President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York will not take place, and that any settlement details would be worked out through intermediaries.
