Iranian parliament's deputy speaker says no permission will be given for a petrol price increase

Ali Nikzad, deputy speaker of Iran's parliament, said on Tuesday 28 July 2026 that parliament has not granted, and will not grant at this juncture, permission for the government to raise petrol prices. He said what is on the agenda is a reallocation of quotas rather than a price increase, and urged officials not to play with the public's nerves.
His remarks came on the same day that the government spokesman said a decision to rebalance the petrol situation was settled in principle, but that it remained unclear whether it would be implemented through a price increase, a change to quotas, or a combination of both. The spokesman also said no decision had yet been taken on the pump price of fuel.
Petrol pricing is one of the most consequential variables for inflation, transport costs and the vehicle market in Iran, and any change tends to feed quickly into other markets. As of Tuesday evening 28 July, no new petrol price had been announced.
