Iran's Arbaeen border terminals handle more than 2.81 million crossings in 14 days
1 August 2026 | 3 months ago
Fourteen days into the Arbaeen pilgrimage season, from 25 Tir to 7 Mordad 1405, more than 2,810,000 people have passed through Iran's Arbaeen border terminals on outbound and return journeys to the shrine cities in Iraq.
The volume represents one of Iran's largest seasonal cross border movements and places a substantial load on border terminal capacity, the road transport fleet and support services along the routes leading to the country's western frontiers.
The Arbaeen passenger flow is also one of the seasonal channels of foreign currency demand and cross border exchange between Iran and Iraq, since part of pilgrims' spending takes place on the Iraqi side and in dinars.
