Iran's industry ministry says only legal entities may import new cars, with individuals limited to used vehicles

Ezzatollah Zarei, spokesperson for Iran's Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade, said in a radio interview published by Mehr News Agency on Sunday 26 July 2026 that under current rules the import of new cars is possible only for legal entities, so that after sales service, parts supply and accountability to consumers are guaranteed.
He said individuals may only import used vehicles under article 11 of the law on organising the car industry, a route that requires proving the vehicle's authenticity, confirming it is not stolen and obtaining the necessary approvals from the relevant authorities. Zarei described the conditions as not easy.
Zarei added that Iranians resident abroad before the date set in the regulations, with a vehicle registered in their name, may each import one car without a currency transfer, with the final approval on the foreign exchange side resting with the Central Bank. On bringing free zone vehicles into the mainland, he said resolving the issue requires legislation by parliament.
