Ebrahim Azizi, chairman of the Iranian parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, said on the evening of Sunday, 26 July 2026, that expert review of a comprehensive Strait of Hormuz management bill has been completed and that the commission will vote on the bill's general outline next week.
He said the commission met that day with representatives of executive bodies and various branches of the armed forces, and that about 12 plans and proposals on how to manage the waterway are currently on its agenda. The views of all agencies are to be submitted by Wednesday of this week, after which the commission will first vote on the general outline and then begin examining the details. Azizi said the aim is to consolidate those views into a comprehensive law on the exercise of sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.
The Strait of Hormuz carries a large share of the Persian Gulf's exported oil and liquefied gas, and has faced disrupted shipping traffic and a surge in war risk insurance premiums in recent months. Any change to the legal framework governing the waterway therefore matters for global energy market expectations and for shipping and insurance costs.
