Hadi Sobhanian, head of Iran's National Tax Administration, said on Monday 27 July 2026 that tax revenue in the first four months of the current Iranian year reached about 507 trillion tomans, compared with about 396 trillion tomans in the same period last year, a rise of 32 percent.
He said tax revenue in the first four months of last year equalled 21.8 percent of the annual budget, while this year the ratio stands at about 20.5 percent. Sobhanian said the increase came while economic growth was around 4 percent, attributing it to automation of processes and a data-driven system rather than heavier pressure on taxpayers.
He also reported a 153 percent rise in tax refunds, from about 11 trillion tomans in the first four months of last year to about 29 trillion tomans in the same period this year. According to him, reviews identified 176,000 cases of wholesale card readers being misused in retail activity. Filing deadlines for guilds and legal entities that fell due in Khordad and Tir have been extended to Shahrivar.
