Italy's National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT) reported on Friday, 31 July 2026, that the country's consumer confidence index rose to 94.2 points in July 2026 from 92.4 points in June. The market forecast was 92.5 points, so the reading came in above expectations.
In the same release, Italy's business confidence index rose to 89.6 points in July from a revised 88.6 points, also beating the market expectation of 88.9 points. Italy's consumer confidence index has averaged 93.55 points since 1982, with a record low of 73.9 points in June 2012. On this index, a value of 100 indicates no change in consumer sentiment.
Italy is the euro area's third largest economy, and a simultaneous improvement in household and business sentiment there, alongside the improvement in euro area business climate in July, is among the inputs into the European Central Bank's interest rate decisions. The data was published on a day when Italy's preliminary July inflation also rose, from 2.8% to 3.0%.
