Jordan's air defence systems intercepted and destroyed five missiles fired from Iran early on Wednesday, 29 July 2026. The US military described the operation as an attempted "surprise attack" on US forces.
The aerospace force of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it had targeted Muwaffaq Salti Air Base and a CENTCOM command centre in Jordan. US President Donald Trump said all five missiles fired had been knocked down, and told Fox News that the United States would be hitting Iran hard. Published reports did not identify any casualties from the attack.
Global markets reacted to the escalation the same day, with oil prices rising as concern over disruption to energy supplies increased. Military developments in West Asia affect Iran's markets through oil and gold prices and the exchange rate.
