North Korea threatens additional military options after Japan's Tomahawk missile test

5 August 2026 | 3 months ago

Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korea's leader, warned in a statement carried by state news agency KCNA on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, that Pyongyang would adopt "additional military options" after Japan test-fired a US-made Tomahawk cruise missile.

She accused the Japanese military of moving away from a defensive posture and transforming into a power capable of preemptive attacks, citing the Tomahawk test from the Aegis destroyer Chokai in the Pacific Ocean, other missile test-firings, and Japan's participation in a US-led joint military drill in the Philippines in May. She also said the United States stands behind those moves by supplying the Tomahawk missiles and supporting the tests.

The statement follows at least six KCNA editorials and commentaries since July criticising security cooperation between the United States, South Korea and Japan. Analysts say the messaging could lay the groundwork for fresh military demonstrations, including missile tests. Tension on the Korean Peninsula reaches global markets through East Asian energy demand and financial markets.
