Pakistan says date and venue for direct Iran US talks are still not finalized
3 August 2026 | 3 months ago
While US President Donald Trump said on Monday, 3 August 2026, that Washington is in talks with Iran, Pakistani officials told the Anadolu news agency that no date or venue has yet been finalized for direct negotiations between the two countries. A senior Pakistani official said no meeting between American and Iranian negotiators is scheduled in Islamabad for at least the next 24 hours.
According to the report, the mediators' proposal is that the two sides first hold indirect talks through intermediaries to reach a minimum understanding, after which direct negotiations would resume. The sources said the nuclear file is not included in the first stage of direct talks, and that the main focus will be halting hostilities and returning to the situation that prevailed before 9 July.
The report also refers to a joint Pakistani and Qatari plan under which Tehran would reopen the Strait of Hormuz while Washington would lift the naval blockade of Iranian ports. Islamabad and Doha are named among the likely venues for any future talks. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said on Monday, 3 August, that Iran currently has no negotiations underway with the United States.
