Pakistan invites senior Iranian negotiators to visit Islamabad

4 August 2026 | 3 months ago

Pakistan's Foreign Ministry said in a statement released late on Monday, 3 August 2026 (12 Mordad 1405), that Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar spoke with his Iranian counterpart Seyed Abbas Araghchi about regional and international developments. According to Anadolu Agency on Tuesday, 4 August, Islamabad has invited senior Iranian negotiators to visit Pakistan at their earliest convenience to discuss ongoing diplomatic efforts to restart the stalled direct talks with the United States. No timing for such a visit has been set.

The contacts followed US President Donald Trump's cancellation on Saturday of planned military strikes on Iran, after which he said allies had urged him to hold off because a deal appeared imminent. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said on Monday that Tehran is not engaged in negotiations with Washington.

According to the report, Pakistani and Qatari mediators are in contact with Washington and Tehran to finalise a date and venue for the resumption of direct talks, but neither has yet been agreed. Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum on 17 June under which negotiations toward a permanent settlement on several contentious issues, including Iran's nuclear programme, were to advance within 60 days. Hostilities that began last month have cast uncertainty over the future of that agreement.
