Peskov: Europe is grappling with the consequences of rising natural gas prices

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday, September 9, 2026 (18 Shahrivar 1405), according to Khabaronline citing Mehr News Agency, that European countries are now facing the consequences of rising natural gas prices. He said European gas prices have surged sharply amid the US war on Iran and reached their highest level since late 2022 last week, when the start of the Ukraine war had pushed Europe to cut its reliance on Russian pipeline gas. Peskov said Europe is hurting itself by buying expensive gas on spot markets instead of using the cheaper Russian option, adding that Russia can still supply gas to Europe at a lower price.
