Pezeshkian: Moving a Litre of Petrol Costs Four to Five Thousand Tomans, Yet It Is Sold at 1,500

13 October 2026 | 7 days ago

President Masoud Pezeshkian, speaking at the start-of-academic-year ceremony at Shahid Beheshti University on Monday 20 Mehr 1405 (12 October 2026), said about petrol prices: "Everyone knows petrol cannot be sold at 1,500 tomans; its transport alone is four to five thousand tomans." Donya-e-Eqtesad and Khabaronline relayed the remarks; in the video published by EcoIran and Khabaronline his line runs that transporting petrol costs 5,000 tomans yet it is sold at 1,500.

Using a medical analogy, he added: "We accustom the patient to his condition gradually; one prescription cannot solve the problem." The president described price change as gradual, and no new decision or plan for petrol prices was announced. The third petrol price tier has been in force since Mordad 1405, and on Monday the National Oil Refining and Distribution Company reported higher CNG use and a 10-million-litre fall in daily petrol consumption since it took effect. The president's remarks signal an official position on gradual fuel price reform, not a new order or ruling.
