Power Cuts Kill Thousands of Chickens, and the Iran Chamber Warns of Lower Output
28 September 2026 · 10 days ago
Hossein Mahdizad, head of the livestock and poultry working group at the Iran Chamber of Commerce, told Mehr News Agency that power cuts and electrical surges inside poultry farms have killed thousands of chickens; in one recent case more than 40,000 birds died and in another, in Hamedan, about 30,000, with producers having no backing to recover the losses. The interview was published on Monday, 6 Mehr 1405 (September 28, 2026).
Mahdizad warned that continued losses and a lack of adequate insurance support could reduce output, push up prices and lower quality in the coming months, eventually forcing higher imports. He cited rising input costs and the abrupt removal of the preferential exchange rate as other cost pressures on producers, and said the electronic food coupon had not fully met its goals for protein goods.
