Ray Dalio, After US Debt Tops $40 Trillion: Buy Gold and a Little Bitcoin
22 August 2026 · 2 months ago
According to Arzdigital, Ray Dalio, founder of Bridgewater Associates, again stressed the importance of holding gold and bitcoin in an investment portfolio in a post on X after US federal debt passed the $40 trillion mark. He wrote: "I suggest you diversify your assets across asset classes and countries with strong financial statements and balance sheets that are not embroiled in internal political conflicts and external geopolitical conflicts, reduce the weightings of debt assets like bonds, and increase the weightings of gold and some bitcoin."
Per Arzdigital, citing US Treasury Department data, total federal debt has risen by about $2.4 trillion in less than eight months. Dalio said allocating 10 to 15 percent of a portfolio to gold is necessary to manage risk during periods of fiscal strain, and while he said he still prefers gold for its long history and high liquidity among central banks, he also described bitcoin as an asset that operates outside conventional debt markets and as a hedge against monetary expansion and heavy government borrowing.
