Rumor of Vehicle Import Tariff Hike Pushes Prices Up as Ministry Denies Plan
1 September 2026 · last month
According to the newspaper Iran, carried by Khabaronline, Iran's Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade has announced its opposition to imposing a 100 percent import tariff on vehicles, though it remains unclear how far the rumor reflects an actual official decision. Still, according to auto market analyst Hossein Rahiminejad, the mere circulation of such a report, even before it becomes reality, can shift market expectations and push up prices for imported, assembled and even some domestically produced vehicles in the short term.
Rahiminejad added that reduced vehicle production this year, driven by sanctions conditions and recent months events, has also limited supply to the market, which further increases the market's capacity for price increases. Alongside rising prices, the vehicle market is also seeing lower trading volumes, as buyers and sellers hold off pending a final decision on the tariff.
