Syria's official news agency SANA, citing a diplomatic source at the country's foreign ministry, confirmed a meeting between a senior Syrian delegation led by Asaad al-Shaibani, foreign minister of Syria's transitional government, and an Israeli delegation headed by Roman Gofman, chief of Israel's Mossad intelligence agency. According to Khabaronline, the meeting took place on Sunday, Shahrivar 1, 1405 (August 23, 2026), in Amman, the Jordanian capital, and was mediated by the United States. Per SANA, the main topics included halting Israeli military strikes on Syrian territory, reviving talks toward a durable security agreement, Damascus's insistence on full sovereignty over rebuilding its national army, and a demand for Israeli forces to withdraw to their positions before December 8, 2024. The meeting was earlier reported by the US news outlet Axios and, separately, by Agence France-Presse.
