Tehran's daily water consumption falls by 500,000 cubic metres from 1403 to 3.5 million cubic metres

3 August 2026 | 3 months ago

Behnam Bakhshi, spokesman for the Tehran Province Water and Wastewater Company, said on Monday 12 Mordad 1405 (3 August 2026) that Tehran's daily water consumption, which stood at about four million cubic metres in 1403, has fallen by roughly 500,000 cubic metres to about 3.5 million cubic metres. He described the reduction as equivalent to saving one billion half-litre bottles of water a day.

He attributed the decline to consumption management schemes, the installation of water-reducing fittings and greater public awareness. He added that at the start of Tir 1405 (late June 2026) the combined reserves of Tehran's dams stood at about 31 percent, with the Amir Kabir dam in good condition while reserves at the Mamlou and Lar dams remain low.

Bakhshi stressed that there is no plan for water rationing or scheduled cuts in Tehran, and that demand management remains the main way through the water stress. Water stress and energy imbalance are among the constraints affecting industrial activity in Iran.
