Tehran's Daily Water Use Falls From 4 to About 3 Million Cubic Metres, While Provincial Rainfall Stays 36 Percent Below the Long-Term Average

11 October 2026 | 9 days ago

Alireza Jozghasemi, CEO of the Tehran Province Water and Wastewater Company, said at a press conference today, Sunday 11 October 2026 (19 Mehr 1405), that Tehran's daily water consumption, which reached 4 million cubic metres about two years ago, has fallen to about 3 million cubic metres, a 25 percent drop that he said equals roughly 6 billion half-litre bottles a day. In the first six months of this year, water withdrawals in the province were also cut by about 70 million cubic metres, a volume comparable to the capacity of the Latyan dam.

He explained that getting through a normal water year takes about 800 million cubic metres of surface storage in the five dams that supply Tehran, but over the past five years reserves in many years were below 500 million cubic metres, and last water year began with about 250 million cubic metres. Rainfall in Tehran province last water year was 36 percent below the long-term average, even though national rainfall rose about 11 percent from the year before.

According to Jozghasemi, more than 200 points of the province's main water installations were damaged in the war, but water supply and wastewater collection did not stop and the summer passed without serious disruption. He also said four wastewater treatment plants will come into operation by the end of the year.
