The US 30-year mortgage rate reaches 6.66 percent, its highest level in a year

31 July 2026 · 2 months ago

Freddie Mac's weekly Primary Mortgage Market Survey (PMMS) reported that the average US 30-year fixed-rate mortgage stood at 6.66 percent in the week ending 30 July 2026 (8 Mordad 1405). The 15-year fixed-rate average was reported at 6.04 percent in the same week.

The Associated Press described the figure as the highest level for the US 30-year mortgage rate in a year. Mortgage rates are one of the main channels through which monetary policy reaches American households, and a sustained rise raises the cost of buying a home for purchasers.

The reading came in a week when the US Federal Reserve, at its meeting on Wednesday, 29 July 2026 (7 Mordad 1405), held its policy rate in the 3.5 to 3.75 percent range and pointed to "elevated" inflation in its statement. Freddie Mac's data is based on thousands of loan applications submitted by lenders across the United States.
